Research Guide

This blog is intended to assist CBC Library users in finding information resources for history-related topics. 'General' postings should be read first - they cover resources appropriate to all time periods, regions and topics. Other postings highlight resources of particular interest to specific classes. The terms 'ancient,' 'middle ages' and 'modern' are used very loosely; please address any questions about the defining events and characteristics of these periods to a history faculty member.

Reference - General

Daily Life Online: Essays on the domestic, economic, religious, and other aspects of people's daily lives, ancient to modern. Browse by time period, region, and subject category, or search by keyword.

Facts.com: Online, expanded version of the Facts-on-File World News Digest, with coverage of the modern world from 1940 to present. Special features include a timeline of Top News Stories by decade: 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s; a companion database, Issues and Controversies in American History, may be searched separately or simultaneously.

Gale Virtual Reference - History & Culture Encyclopedias and dictionaries covering the history of the World, Prehistory - Modern. Includes the history of ideas, religions and many other cultural aspects.

Oxford Reference Online - History: Scholarly reference works including:

ProQuest History Study Center - Resources provided include Reference articles, Biographies, Historiography, Maps, Primary sources, Images, Journal articles and Web links.

American Women's History: A Research Guide Best Information on the Net - History: Sites selected for scholarly research by O'Keefe Library at St. Ambrose University; primarily free sites, some subscription sites are listed to which CBC students will not have access.

Best of History Web Sites: indexes "over 1200 history-related web sites that have been reviewed for quality, accuracy, and usefulness."

Biography of America: companion website to the Annenberg/WGBH video series, with key events, maps, and a 'webography' for each segment. Videos may be viewed online with free registration.

Digital History: Primarily U.S. history

Cold War International History Project History Guide: A "subject gateway to scholarly relevant websites in history;" use the Advanced Search feature to limit by language (this is an international project).

H-Net Discussion Networks - Email lists and other resources for over 100 topics in history and the humanities.

Internet Public Library - History Section

Making of America: "a digital library of primary sources in American social history from the antebellum period through reconstruction."

OAIster: Open Archives Initiative; searches over 7 million records of "academically-oriented digital resources."

Perseus Digital Library: Primary and secondary sources for the study of various time periods and places, including the classical world and the English Renaissance.

Repositories of Primary Sources: Lists"over 5000 websites describing holdings of manuscripts, archives, rare books, historical photographs, and other primary sources;" most have at least some online content.

U.S. National Archives: Includes thousands of online historical documents.
